This course focuses on the effects of light and shadow on various forms and requires students to create observational recordings of the effects, quality, design and purpose of understanding light and shadow. Students will also discover the historical context of light and shadow in classic and modern paintings, from the application of ‘chiaroscuro’ in classical painting, to the pattern-like approach of modern art. Students will use a range of materials to undertake various exercises investigating light and shadow. Students will produce visual records based on observation, as well as studies based on work by old masters such as Leonardo da Vinci.
